House of Hope
The House of Hope is a dormitory type building with 16 rooms being built by Send Hope. Its purpose is to house two groups of people; partially disabled students and malnourished babies and their families.
The partially disabled students cannot do the physical work required to grow crops and harvest food in the jungles. They need an education. In their small villages, they can go through the sixth grade. To continue their education they must come to Puerto Lempira but do not have a place to live.
One of the few hospitals in that area in in Puerto Lempira. Often times, mothers will travel many hours by boat or walking to get their child to the hospital. After being released from the hospital, follow up visits are required, so they need to stay in Puerto Lempira for awhile.
Most of the students and patients cannot afford to rent a room or buy food. The House of Hope will meet this need for some for some of the people. The overseers of the House of Hope will be a US family, Roger and Katrina Engle.
The House of Hope opened its doors in February 2005, and we had the dedication in May 2005. There are roughly 20-25 children living in the House of Hope at any given time. There are 12 students living in the House of Hope and the malnourished babies come and go fairly sporadically.
